Charming Shark: A Story of Adventure, Craftsmanship, and Heart
In 1984, after serving in the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor, Michael set out on a new journey that would become the foundation of Charming Shark. What began as a small family hobby—creating charms and necklaces from hand-dug shark teeth—quickly grew into something more. With a passion for craftsmanship and a desire to share his creations, Michael took to the road, living out of his van, connecting with customers face-to-face, and building a loyal following one stop at a time.
At the time, the jewelry market lacked branded products, engaging displays, or customer-focused service. Michael saw an opportunity to raise the standard of quality and experience. Driven by that vision, he began traveling to Bali, where he expanded the product line and introduced handcrafted Balinese wood jewelry to the U.S. market—blending style with global influences and authentic materials. This innovative approach set Charming Shark apart early on and helped shape its identity as more than just a jewelry company.
During this chapter of his travels, while selling jewelry in a store, Michael met Desiree. Their connection was instant. Soon after, the two married and joining forces.
From humble beginnings to opening their first warehouse in 1988 and hiring their very first employee, Charming Shark became more than a jewelry brand. It became a movement built on adventure, authenticity, and heart.
As the company grew, Michael introduced a pioneering idea: to create employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. In a time before such programs were common, he made countless phone calls and sent faxes (remember, this was the ‘80s and ‘90s) to make it happen. Charming Shark became one of the first companies in its industry to do so—a model that would inspire larger corporations and contribute to a broader societal shift toward inclusion and opportunity.
As the years have passed, Michael and Desiree have remained deeply involved in the heart of the company, ensuring that its original values of adventure and authenticity continue to guide every decision. In recent years, their son Mikey has stepped into an instrumental role, leading the sales team and contributing fresh design ideas that keep the brand evolving. With his eye for modern trends and commitment to maintaining the company’s adventurous spirit, Mikey has helped shape a brand identity that resonates with the next generation while honoring the legacy his parents built.
Today, Charming Shark remains a family-owned lifestyle jewelry company with an amazing team dedicated to creating stylish, meaningful pieces for sun seekers, travelers, and mountain explorers alike. Every accessory is crafted as a reminder to live fully, explore often, and always carry a piece of adventure with you.
